The Elder Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet used by the Germanic peoples. It consists of 24 characters, and its name is derived from the first six letters of the runic sequence: F, U, Þ, A, R, and K. The Elder Futhark was primarily used by early Germanic tribes, including the Vikings, during the Migration Period and the Viking Age (around 150–800 AD).
Each runic character in the Elder Futhark represents a specific sound, and these characters were often used for writing inscriptions on various objects, such as weapons, tools, and runestones. The characters not only served a practical purpose but also had symbolic and mystical meanings. In addition to their use for writing, runes were believed to possess magical properties and were often associated with divination and rituals.
The runes of the Elder Futhark have been adapted for various modern purposes, including divination, crafts, and jewelry design, and they continue to hold cultural and historical significance in the Norse and Germanic traditions.
