In Greek mythology, Medusa was a Gorgon, a creature with snakes for hair whose gaze could turn people into stone. She was one of the three Gorgon sisters, daughters of the sea deities Phorcys and Ceto. Medusa was once a beautiful mortal woman, but she incurred the wrath of the goddess Athena. According to one version of the myth, Medusa was cursed by Athena for a romantic encounter with Poseidon in Athena’s temple.
As a result of the curse, Medusa’s hair turned into snakes, and her gaze became petrifying. She became a monstrous creature, and those who looked directly at her turned to stone. Medusa met her end when the hero Perseus, aided by the gods Hermes and Athena, beheaded her while looking at her reflection in a polished shield to avoid her deadly gaze. From her blood, the winged horse Pegasus and the giant Chrysaor, both of whom were her offspring with Poseidon, were born.
Medusa is often depicted in art and literature, and her image has become a symbol associated with Greek mythology and classical antiquity.
