After Odin and his brothers Ve and Vili created the universe and the nine worlds, they walked along the beach and found two logs washed ashore. They shaped the logs into human forms: Odin breathed life into them, Vili gave them wits and hearts, and Ve bestowed senses, expressive features, and speech. The brothers also provided names and clothing, calling the male Ask (“Ash”) and the female Embla (“Elm”). Ask and Embla became the progenitors of the human race, with Midgard as their residence.
