Raven Skane and Skean Design
The name Skane relates to Skåne, also known as Scania, in southern Sweden. The spelling Skean may also appear in modern product descriptions and searches for this style of raven jewellery. This pendant combines the raven motif with a Viking-inspired hammer form.
Ravens feature prominently in Norse mythology and have particularly strong associations with Odin. According to Old Norse tradition, Odin has two ravens named Huginn and Muninn, who travel across the world and return with information.
Huginn is commonly associated with thought, while Muninn is associated with memory. As a result, modern Norse-inspired jewellery often uses raven imagery to represent thought, memory, knowledge and observation.
Hiddensee Hammer Inspiration
The Hiddensee treasure takes its name from the German Baltic island of Hiddensee. People discovered pieces of this Viking Age gold jewellery hoard during the 19th century. The collection dates to around the 10th century and includes distinctive pendants with cross and hammer-like forms.
However, scholars have discussed whether these forms represent Christian crosses, Thor’s hammers or deliberately combined symbolism. Therefore, this pendant draws inspiration from Viking Age imagery without presenting one interpretation of the original Hiddensee pieces as certain.
Leather Necklace
The pendant comes with a 33-inch brown leather necklace approximately 1.5mm thick. In addition, silver-tone steel clasps complete the necklace. When you first remove the necklace from its packaging, gently warm the leather between your hands to help make it more supple before wearing.
